I know that Yahoo and Windows Live contacts can message each other but can I sign in to Yahoo Messenger with my Windows Live Messenger username (hotmail account)?

No. Yahoo! accounts can only sign in with Messenger, not WLM. Same applies for Window Live Messenger, but with the proper accounts.
