My msn messenger and windows hotmail sound alerts arent working..Any ideas

i have a laptop and all other sound funtions work, so i can listen 2 music except the windows live stuff. checked the settings on msn messender and it says alerts are turned on...What cud be the problem

I used to have this problem and this is how I fixed it,





WARNING: Make sure you follow these instructions to the letter, if you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.





1. Verify that the sound schemes are defined in the registry:


a. Right-click the MSN Messenger icon, and then click Exit.


b. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.


c. Click HKEY_CURRENT_USER.


d. Click AppEvents, and then click EventLabels.


e. Verify that MSNMSGR_ContactOnline is listed in the EventLabels folder. If it is not listed, do the following:


a. Click EventLabels.


b. Select Edit from the menu bar.


c. Select New, and then click Key.


d. Type MSNMSGR_ContactOnline to rename the folder, and then press Enter.


e. Select MSNMSGR_ContactOnline.


f. Right-click Default in Registry Editor window, and then click Modify.


g. Type Contact Online in the Value Data field.


h. Repeat these steps to create the following keys with their values:


Create MSNMSGR_NewAlert with the value New Alert.


Create MSNMSGR_NewMail with the value New Mail.


Create MSNMSGR_NewMessage with the value New Message.





2. Make sure that the scheme exists for MSN Messenger:


a. Click HKEY_CURRENT_USER.


b. Click AppEvents, and then click Schemes.


c. Click Apps.


d. Verify that MSNMSGR is listed in the Apps folder. If it is not listed, create registry entries to define sound schemes for MSN Messenger:


a. Right-click Apps, and then select New.


b. Click Key.


c. Type MSNMS.GR in the new folder to rename the folder, and then press Enter.


d. Select MSNMS.GR.


e. Right-click Default in Registry Editor window, and then click Modify.


f. Type MSN Messenger in the Value data field.


g. Follow these steps to create registry entries for each event label that you created:


a. Click HKEY_CURRENT_USER.


b. Click AppEvents, and then click Schemes.


c. Click Apps, and then click MSNMSGR.


d. Select Edit from the menu bar.


e. Select New, and then click Key.


f. Type MSNMSGR_ContactOnline in the new folder to rename the folder.


g. Select MSNMSGR_ContactOnline.


h. On theEditmenu, select New, and then click Key.


i. Type .Current in the new folder to rename the folder, and then press Enter.


j. Select .Current .


k. Right-click Default in Registry Editor window, and then click Modify.


l. Type C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\online.wav in the Value data field.


m. Repeat these steps to create the following keys with their values:


MSNMSGR_ContactOnline with the .Current value of C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\online.wav


MSNMSGR_NewAlert with the .Current value of C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\newalert.wav


MSNMSGR_NewMail with the .Current value of C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\newemail.wav


MSNMSGR_NewMessage with the .Current value of C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\type.wav





e. Sign in to MSN Messenger.


f. On theToolsmenu, and then click Options.


g. On theGeneral tab, click Sounds to open the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties window.


h. Click the Sounds tab.


i. In the Program events list, scroll down to verify that the entries for MSN Messenger are available

Reply:go on to controll panel then sound then it might be on mute or if its not then turn it up to the top
Reply:Check that your status is not set to Busy, this mutes all the sound effects!
