Yes. It is determined by the connection. Once the user on the other end closes the conversation, he/she disconnects from a centralized connection with you.
Basically, when you view all connections with messenger discovery, it shows who you're connected to - close the chat and it will vanish. That's as good as saying they've closed the conversation.

i would check your date and time on your computer make sure they are correct. the wrong time/date will prevent login

Why does hotmail have so much spam compared to yahoo? And why do I get spam via Windows Live Messenger?
It seems that you have somewhere put your e-mail adress a place where spammers can harvest it. You might have been using hotmail for longer and thats why you might be getting more spam. Or it could be just that yahoo catches spam better than hotmail.

As long as you log in within 120 days via messenger your account will remain active because technically you're still using that account for something. Now if you don't log in to messenger OR your actual e-mail inbox for 120 days then yes the account will be deleted.

MSN Messenger and Hotmail not working?
Hi, does anybody know why MSN Messenger won't sign in?? All that is happening is I type my e-mail address and password like it says and then it just keeps saying Signing In. At the moment, it is still saying Signing In, 1 hour and 15 minutes after I typed my address and password. And also when I try and access Hotmail and any other MSN related sites, it doesn't let me on them. Does anybody know why?? Please help me out here because I have been without the internet for more than 6 months, got it back today and I can't even access my MSN Messenger account OR my Hotmail account.

I used to have this problem and this is how I fixed it,
WARNING: Make sure you follow these instructions to the letter, if you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. 1. Verify that the sound schemes are defined in the registry:
a. Right-click the MSN Messenger icon, and then click Exit.
b. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
c. Click HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
d. Click AppEvents, and then click EventLabels.
e. Verify that MSNMSGR_ContactOnline is listed in the EventLabels folder. If it is not listed, do the following:
a. Click EventLabels.
b. Select Edit from the menu bar.
c. Select New, and then click Key.
d. Type MSNMSGR_ContactOnline to rename the folder, and then press Enter.
e. Select MSNMSGR_ContactOnline.
f. Right-click Default in Registry Editor window, and then click Modify.
g. Type Contact Online in the Value Data field.

I just signed up to have a hotmail account,because I had a Yahoo account,but my Yahoo account locked me out! So,I signed up for a hotmail in case Yahoo does it again. Problems accessing Hotmail and MSN messenger?
I am suddenly having problems accessing the above. I have changed nothing on my computer. Just switched on yesterday to find I cannot use Hotmail through Outlook, and cannot log into MSN Live Messenger. When I try to log into messenger I get this message: "Signing into Windows Live Messenger Failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. Error code: 80040111." When I try to use Outlook, it shows a problem synchronizing headers - reported error (0x80040111).
Any ideas? My husband is not having any problems with messenger and doesn't use Outlook.

To clean your computer, follow these steps. These tools are verified by me and several IT professionals to be safe and free.

2. Install adaware and run it at least once to update the definition files.
3. Download and install spybot S%26amp;D from
http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-De...
4. Install SpyBot and run it at least once to update the program.
5. Restart your computer, and hit F8 before the Windows loading screen comes up.
6. Select Safe Mode. (http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsaf... for help)
7. Run Adaware and SpyBot in safe mode to ensure a clean system of spyware and adware.

Reply:You'll find an option for importing contacts in your new email account. DO NOT delete your old account until you have imported your contacts and confirmed it on your other account. There's also an Export option in the "Options" tab once you sign in. As for signing into messenger, all you have to do is click "Switch User" and put in your new account. Your contacts will be there.

Try downloading the New Windows Live Mail beta version - you can check all your emails , yahoo, msn, hotmail, ect... Its WAY better than Outlook Express.

Also, disable Phishing under tools, that slows things down. You can also turn it completely off if you want. Only use it if you are unsure of a site. If its one you have always visted without problems, you most likely dont need it.
Reply:Are you running the beta version if so this is a very common problem and guess your just getting a blank page, I don't think there a way to solve this problem at the min, you could try deleting your cookies see if that helps or just signing it at hotmail.com instead of threw messenger, lots of people now use firefox web browser and love it and there are no issues with hotmail! if you want it go to www.firefox.com, hope this helps.

Try downloading the New Windows Live Mail beta version - you can check all your emails , yahoo, msn, hotmail, ect... Its WAY better than Outlook Express.

Also, disable Phishing under tools, that slows things down. You can also turn it completely off if you want. Only use it if you are unsure of a site. If its one you have always visted without problems, you most likely dont need it.
Reply:Are you running the beta version if so this is a very common problem and guess your just getting a blank page, I don't think there a way to solve this problem at the min, you could try deleting your cookies see if that helps or just signing it at hotmail.com instead of threw messenger, lots of people now use firefox web browser and love it and there are no issues with hotmail! if you want it go to www.firefox.com, hope this helps.

I have a hotmail/msn messenger account. I recently signed my husband up for a hotmail acct also %26amp; used the option to link it to mine....OK, now how do I set him up on messenger so he can IM as well? My computer tells me I cant install it cuz its already installed %26amp; im confused. If 2 hotmail accts can be linked to one inbox why isn't the same option available with messenger or am I missing something.

my live messenger doesnt work! if i click the icon nothing happens, it doesnt open at all, if i click the little icon in the lower right part of the toolbar nothing happens too.
also when i try to view my emails, in hotmail, my internet tab freezes and wont close or respond. the only way i can close it if i use task manager and shut down the whole internet.
How do i fix these problems?

This is a silly question, but I really need to know.
When you create a Windows Live ID (example: abc@hotmail.co.uk), do you automatically get an email account with it? If so, can you access it through MSN messenger? I know that I have an email account, but I want to email someone who's MSN address is similar to the one stated above and I want to make sure he reads it. when you get a windows live you have a choice to either have the one that ends with .com or .co.uk (england)

My friend has sent me her hotmail address but each time I try to send her mail, it keeps coming back to me undelivered. I have been talking on messenger with her, and next to her "name" it says...address not verified...and her hotmail address has a ".au" after it. I thought Hotmail accounts were all only ".com"?? By the way, I have tried to send mail to her WITH and WITHOUT the ".au" at the end. I know we can sort it through the proper channels, but as I was already in Yahoo Answers, just thought I'd see if anyone else had come across the same??

This has become an issue for many Messenger users. An offical support blog has been created to resolve the issues.
You can go here to see the latest advice to resolve the problem. There are quite a few to work through, but thus far one or more of these is reconnecting Messenger users worldwide.
Assuming your firewall (if you have one) is not the issue I recommend scrolling down page to the option #7which shows you how to manually re-register the SSL security libraries. That is the most likely issue when firewall is not the problem.
If that fails then its a case of trying each resolution one by one till you resolve the issue.

I have recenctly got an iPhone, and i need to make a new email account to use my email on my phone. However, i want to use the same email for my messenger.
Any providers/servers [i dont know what they are called] that will do both?

On yahoo messenger names disappear, tabs disappear in hotmail?
On yahoo messenger the names disappear tabs disappear in hotmail and with msn the words disappear why? The computer and internet are running fine. Whats the problem?

but on msn, probably have settings to not display tabs, very common if using public computer etc, go to options and untick the "do not display my tabs" option

Windows live problem (messenger hotmail ect)?
i cant log on from any computer at any location i tried 4different computers in four different states no luck getting an error saying there's something wrong with my windows live ID problem started 3days ago i tried everything i could possibly think of looked on microsoft support website %26amp;everywhere in between please somebody help me i got a lot of important emails %26amp;i cant access anything

I find MSN Messenger and Hotmail Live annoyingly user unfriendly but they keep advertising and trying to promote it to you more. I have tried the Hotmail Live and switched back to the older version which I like very much and will never change back to live.What are your experiences?

i think its horrid , but i changed it on the options and gone back to the basic way of how it looks ,, so much better to read now .

I switchec back tot he basic version.
But the messenger live is the best. I love it.

Reply:Its annoying perhaps because its still under beta test. The only problem with mine is that even though i have 1GB RAM and really fast PC, as soon as i login to windows live messenger, it takes forever and freezes my computer for a little while.
Sometimes i get error messages on windows live mail, which i can't report because there was a problem also in reporting. Hopefully they'll fix it in a couple of years time.
Bascially all i can say is that i have bad experience with all microsoft products, and when i send them email, they just keep asking me to send email to different departments and it goes on and on but no help from them.

is there any registry edit to to stop windows live messenger from loading itself when visiting hotmail website?
i mean, sometimes one needs to check email from hotmail but not to chat on windows live messenger....and every time one visits hotmail website, windows live messenger automatically loads...and it's very annoying...i've heard is there a registry edit..if so what is it? i'm using windows xp pro

It has more features avatars style of writing and colour background smileys and winkies.

Okay, I signed my children up to msn messenger using their existing Yahoo Email Addy. Now I have the opposite scenario, and I am having trouble working it out. lol.
My neice wants to use her existing MSN Hotmail addy to sign up for Yahoo Messenger. Can this be done and how?

Has nothing to do with the Internet service. It is the hotmail. Try reinstalling the messenger and reinstalling rebooting after each. If the problem is still there, than contact help.

Which Messenger has more cool features, Yahoo or Hotmail?
I'm a user of both Yahoo and Hotmail (msn) Messengers. Though i'm greater fan of Yahoo, i've noticed that many of my friends are regularly using MSN to chat. Both Msn and Yahoo constantly upgrade their features, which makes the competition for users even more stiff. Which one do think is better?
